My experience of Raw Vegan Diet and Water Fasting

What is Raw Vegan Diet?

Raw veganism is a diet that combines the concepts of veganism and raw foodism. It excludes all food of animal origin, as well as food cooked at a temperature above 48 degrees Celsius (118 degrees Fahrenheit). A raw vegan diet includes raw vegetables and fruits, nuts and nut pastes, grain and legume sprouts, seeds, plant oils, sea vegetables, herbs, and fresh juices. There are many different versions of the diet, including fruitarianism, juicearianism, and sproutarianism. The definition of a raw vegan diet can be loosened to include vegan diets with at least 75% raw foods. (source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_veganism)

Why Raw Vegan Food?

Cooking is thought to denature the enzymes naturally present in food. According to raw foodists, enyzymes are the life force of a food, helping us to digest food and absorb nutrients. If we overconsume cooked food, our bodies are forced to work harder by producing more enzymes. Over time, a lack of enzymes from food is thought to lead to digestive problems, nutrient deficiency, accelerated aging, and weight gain.
Cooking food can diminish its nutritional value. For example, the cancer-fighting compounds in broccoli, sulforaphanes, are greatly reduced when broccoli is cooked. Certain vitamins, such as vitamin C and folate, are destroyed by heat. Other foods, however, become more healthful after cooking, because the fibrous portion is broken down. My raw Vegan Diet of 11 days

I started my Raw Vegan diet from 30th January, 2012. My goal was to reduce 5 kg weight to come in the lesser than my ideal weight range as per my BMI. In the first week of raw vegan diet, I enjoyed smoothies in the morning breakfast and salads in lunch and dinner followed by a light dessert. Remember, everything is raw and nothing cooked and no dairy products. I experienced more craving in the first week and tried different raw vegan recipes downloaded from internet and few of them I designed myself suitable to my palate. If you feel interested, drop me an email to share these recipies. In between the meals, I enjoyed raw nuts like almonds, cashews, raisins and walnuts.

By the second week, I observed that my craving for food had reduced and I stopped having breakfast and straightaway had lunch with a glass of juice. For dinner, my craving was more for fruits than a salty foods like salads or sprouts. Throughout the second week I had only a plate of fruit salad during dinner time. With this diet I lost around 3 kg in 11 days, when I started I was weighing 55 Kg and on 11th day I was at 52. I did not do any exercise and I was completely sedentary in my routine. This was intentional, because I wanted to see the actual effect of raw vegan diet. If I had continued any exercise along with this probably I could have lost more kgs.

Final Results of Raw Vegan Diet

  1. Have lost 3kg weight in 11 days
  2. Have a brighter skin
  3. This effect is temporary as once I start my normal diet this effect will go away because the toxins will again start building up in body.
  4. Detoxfication of body
  5. Got rid of all toxins built up in body due to unhealthy food.

Water Fasting for 3 days

What is Water Fasting?

It is a type of fasting when there is zero intake of any solid food and individual stays on water only. To get the best results one should go for at least 3 days of water fasting. It is only from the third day that body changes it's mechanism of getting energy supply. In the absence of any external supply of energy body searches inside and extract maximum possible energy from stored fats, muscle proteins etc.

My experience of Water Fasting

Day 1

Since I am on raw vegan diet for last 11 days my hunger is very much in control and I am not feeling any craving for food. Had my last dinner of only fruits last night around 9:00 PM. After that I have consumed only water. Today I drank almost 5 glasses of water and not feeling to have more of it. There is no craving for water. I am not feeling grogginess or any kind of fatigue. Finding myself more mindful of my speech and able to think better. My sleep is of same duration and it has not reduced at all. Probably, it is a second time for me so my body is very well adapted for it. I am not doing any energy draining activities and preferring only indoor energy saving activities. The only change I can feel is low temperature of body though I am not feeling feverish but the temperature is low. When I got up from my afternoon nap, I had images of hot foods serving like deep fried Indian sweets, Hot chocolate cake, deep fried bread rolls though I did not feel any hunger but those images felt very tempting and my mouth watering after thinking about them. This shows that hunger is triggered by mind rather than body.

Day 2

Today I drank almost 10 glasses of water. I was going through some sites, where it was recommended to add Himalayan salt to water so I tried 3 glasses of water with 3 pinches of himalyan salt to each glass of water. Have also taken one glass of water with juice of half lemon and 2 pinches of Himalayan salt. Did not add more of lemon juice as this could prove acidic to body. I am not feeling grogginess or any kind of fatigue. My sleep is of same duration and has not reduced at all. I am not doing any energy draining activities and preferring only indoor energy saving activities. Everyting was fine till evening but by late evening I started experiencing a mild headache and low blood pressure, temperature of my body was low in the evening. This was all due to the fact that external supply of energy to body has been cut off and my body is switching over to get energy from inside. Not experiencing any symbols of detox as yet, probably it will take one more day to get the detoxification done.

Day 3

Third day was quite a heavy one and throughout the day I was confined to bed and did not feel like doing any activity. Just a rest and nothing else. I was not sleeping as such, but I was simply lying on a bed and probably sleeping intermittently. My dreams during this intermittent sleep were quite lucid and I could remember each and every detail about them. I was feeling heaviness from inside and was feeling too weak to do anything, did not even take a bath as I was finding it too energy consuming. My heart was palpitating and I was experiencing dizziness whenever tried to get up from bed and had a mild headache besides nausea. Around 8 PM, had a strong feeling of nausea and then I puked and afterwards felt quite light from inside. To feel better went out in fresh air for a 20 mins walk.
Around 9:30 PM, had a glance of newspaper and slept around 11:00 PM. Amazingly, with all this, there was no sign of any hunger or any kind of temptation about food. Again around 3:00 AM I was feeling nausea and could not sleep well at all. Around 4:00 AM in the morning, again I puked and then felt better and could sleep for 3 hours or so. Nausea, puking and headache are symptoms of detoxification so I was not worried at all but my family members were extremely worried about my state. I took all these symptoms as welcoming sign of my labor rather than to scare myself. This is due to the fact that I spent good amount of time in reading about Water Fasting and did my in-depth research about how to go about it.
It is very essential to understand and read about water fasting before deciding to go for it. As everyone's body is different and has different tolerance power so one must be considerate about person limitations. Moreover the self discipline and will power plays a major role while on fasting. Many people feel high level of self pity and think as if they are causing punishment to self, with such frame of mind one should not go for fasting.

Breaking Water Fast - Day 4

I am not consuming any grain, dairy product or cooked food since last 14 days and my digestive system is in a sleeping state and cannot bear the burden of any heavy food immediately not even the whole fruits or vegetables. Around 8:00 AM, I squeezed juice of half orange and diluted it with 50% water to ensure that it is heavy for a sleeping digestive system. Followed by it drank half glass of plain water. Again, repeated twice (every 2 hours) the same step of having a diluted juice. To have a different flavor, I had fresh homemade carrot and tomato juice, again had it with 50% dilution. So far juices were getting digested properly and had no feeling of any uneasiness. I continued having juice for the whole day and then I had concentrated homemade juice of tomatoes around 8:00 PM. This too got digested, which means my sleeping digestive system has come back into action. I was slowly feeling good and energetic and started feeling hungry for more food. For dinner, I had mix vegetables cooked with very light oil and spices, and had cooked lentils. The dinner got digested well and I had no feeling of any heaviness or uneasiness.

Post Breaking Water Fast - Day 5

Ending water fast does not mean that you are getting your freedom back of eating mindlessly. If you want to maintain the lost weight, you need to practice restraint on your diet. I am avoiding all fatty foods and only going for simple homemade cooked vegetables and pulses with minimum spices and oil. My breakfast is of only fruits, smoothies and juices, in case fruits/vegetables are out of stock I opt for some nuts (almonds, walnuts and raisins) but will not go for any bread or butter. I want to maintain my current weight of 50 Kg and for that I need to eat very consciously.

Final Results of Water Fasting

  1. Have lost 2kg weight in 3 days
  2. Out of this 2 kg lost weight, approximately 1 kg will come back in week or 10 days because it is more of the water contents of the body which got lost which body will recover once I switch over to normal diet of grains and dairy.
  3. Have a shining skin
  4. This effect is also temporary as once I start my normal diet, the effect will go away because the toxins will again start building up in body.
  5. Have a sense of personal victory of personal discipline and will power
  6. Feeling a sense of personal victory as I have achieved my goal of detoxifying myself and achieving the ideal weight.
  7. A sense of well being
  8. Feeling in a good health and considering myself completely cleaned up from inside.
  9. Feeling rejuvenated
  10. Feeling rejuvenated and energetic. Finding the regular routine jobs more interesting to do. Also, finding myself more mindful in speech and in my conduct and able concentrate better.

Word of Caution

If you are reading this post and feeling excited to start something similar then I would strongly urge you to first get your medical tests (of sugar, Blood pressure) done. If you are undergoing any medication or having some health problem please consult your doctor before you take any such step. Since water fasting involves lot of body changes, you need to ensure that it proves safe and healthy for you. As a last piece of advice, please ensure when you are doing this, you have informed your family members or somebody who can be available in case of any emergency.
