Shakti - The Woman8, Mar, 2014, by Seema Bhatnagar
International woman's day (IWD) is celebrated across the world to commemorates the movement for women's rights. It is indeed an effedtive way for raising awareness among people who still believe in old school of thought and consider women as inferior and without a soul.
Even when the International Women's Day has been celebrated for more than 40 years there are still millions of women across the world for whom the words like "dignity" and "freedom" are just simple plain words existing in dictionary. There are millions who are forced into prostitution, are illiterate and subjected to domestic violence and date rapes and living life of slaves. Probably, those women who need it most might not even know about this day.
Men would remain indebted forever to women. The greatness of giving life to men and giving a real meaning to word "family" can never be paid back in any sense, even a lifetime is less. There are millions of other reasons for which woman should be loved and cared for, which only men knows though they never speak of but somewhere in their heart it is casted.
In this modern age, when women have equal rights, but we still see the pathetic state of women in almost all countries across the world. There is hardly any country which has zero crime against women. When it comes on empowerment, women feel unsafe at streets, homes and at offices. There is still a deep seated stereotyping exists in our society.
Hinduism and Woman
Referring to image above,
Yatra naryastu pujyante ramante tatra Devata, yatraitaastu na pujyante sarvaastatrafalaahkriyaah" is an often-quoted Manu's saying. Manusmriti (3.56) - which translated reads, 'wherever women are given their due respect, even the deities like to reside there and where they are not respected, all actions remain unfruitful'.
It tries to convey the fact, the success of any family, country or organization depends upon how women are treated there. In absence of true respect and love for women, that environment will never prosper and will experience failure at every step.
Traditionally, Hinduism has given a highest status of reverence to womanhood and has considered woman as the power of universe which is sustaining life, called as "Shakti". Even today also this concept exists but has got diluted to a great extent and hardly anybody believes and practice in daily life.
Woman & Greatness
I wish, we all make real genuine efforts and raise awareness at our level to bring real happiness to women who are in our lives. Instead of considering them inferior in any gross or subtle way, respect them for what they are rather than forcing stereotyping on them. Instead of considering them good only for household, glamour and sex, respect their intellect. Being citizens of this planet, nature has enabled us to share resources, roles and responsibilities equally. Let's understand this simple fact and respect and enable women to reach and live the best of their personal potential.
Men would remain indebted forever to women. The greatness of giving life to men and giving a real meaning to word "family" can never be paid back in any sense, even a lifetime is less. There are millions of other reasons for which woman should be loved and cared for, which only men knows, though they never speak of but somewhere in their heart it is casted.
Let's not just celebrate but revere, respect and regard the power of universe that exists in us and in our life.Happy Women's Day.
