Traditional Background

Mathee is a traditional snack, popular in Northern part of India. These are prepared on Diwali and Holi festivals. Besides being an important snack for celebrations these are relished any time. Taste best with mango spicy pickle.

Estimated cooking time : 60 mins


All purpose flour - 250 gm
Ghee (clarified butter) - 100 gm
Cooking oil - 1 cup Milk - 1 cup
Salt - 1 tbspn
Ajwain (Carom seeds)- 1 tbspn


  1. Add milk to flour and knead well to form a hard dough.
  2. Make small balls from the dough.
  3. Roll each ball in a thick round shape.
  4. Pierce it in the middle with a fork 2 -3 times at 2-3 places.

In a separate pan, heat up cooking oil and deep fry these flattened shapes until they are brown. Once they are brown, take them out and put them on an absorbent paper to get extra oil absorbed.

These can be served hot as snacks with tea.
Storage Tips - Matthee can be preserved for a month if kept in air tight container
